"Hello world!" :) Part 2
This is a little update to the post "Hello world!". There us two more languages I'm learning right now, so I decided to add two more Hello World applications.
7. Assembler- PEP72
8. JavaScript
It looks quite simple (apart from the assembler, still need a bit of practice in it), but as I said before, writting this kind of programs give the novice programmer lots information about the language structure.

Unix shell script 1
The following script finds a given string in the files in given directory. The directory is passed as an argument and it has to be relative path from the users home directory.
As a result we get listing of all files, saying in which the given string has been found and in which has not.
#!/bin/csh
if( !( -d ~/$1 ) ) then
echo No directory supplied
exit
endif
echo Enter string:
set w = $<
foreach a ( `ls ~/$1` )
if( !( -d $a ) ) then
set s = `grep -s $w ~/$1/$a | wc -l`
if ( $s>0 ) then
echo $a : $w found
else
echo $a : $w not found
endif
endif
end
As a result we get listing of all files, saying in which the given string has been found and in which has not.

"Hello world!" :)
The first application that any programmer learning any programming language is likely to write is Hello World. This simple program prints out only the string of characters Hello World. Why is it so important if it is so simple?? Well, the main purpose of this task is to get the ‘programmer’ familiar with main structure of the language.
I was bored and got together some Hello World application from the languages I can program in:
1. C
2. C++
3. Java
4. PHP
5. Html
6. Shell script
How would you say 'Hello World!'??

StumbleUpon!!!
One day, completely unsuspected i came across website http://stumbleupon.com. I got attracted by the slogan "Discover your web".I started digging in the website and finally i got it. This website allows you to recommend the websites which you think are interesting with other members.
There are many categories of websites to choose from. During the registration process you'll be asked to specify yours. I'd advise you to do it as later the system will provide you with the websites from given categories.
Another useful tip is to install the toolbar. If you do so, you'll have all functionality in the browser window. You can also rate the sides, whether you like them or not. The system will learn what you prefer with every click.
I found this website very entertaining. You can find really interesting websites, which probably you wouldn't find so easily.

Micrsoft Vs. European Commission & Mozilla Fundation & Opera

EC started another trial against Microsoft and its monopolistic practices. The problem is Internet Explorer. EC does not like the fact that every Windows has pre-installed web browser. In their opinion this practice doesn't not allow fair competition on the market, giving the customers limited choice.
It started couple years ago when Opera Foundation officially complained to the EC. Now, the third party is joining the battle against Microsoft. It is its biggest competitor Mozilla Foundation. EC agreed for Mozilla to provide evidences and documentation to support the trail. In return they will gain access to the documents which Commission is exchanging with Redmond.
At the and of this trail the EU might order the companies to offer the customers alternative web browsers, which is many on the market. Microsoft hasn't yet replied to this, but the answer is expected in couple of months.
I don't use IE and i don't advise anybody to use it. It is not safe and safe web browser. I've been using different web browsers. Through my almost 9 years experience I find Firefox the most reliable and the fastest browser on the market.

Goodbye Windows XP... again
Everybody knows Windows Xp, one of the most successful operating systems released by Microsoft. Unfortunately, according to Microsoft it'll begin to retire in April this year. On the 14 of this month it will leave, what is called "mainstream support" and enter "extended support" which you can understand as time before the day in which it will stop being supported by the Microsoft i.e. DEATH.
As I said it is one of the most successful OS aged at about 7 years. Recently it hit the market of so called Netbooks and now have about 80% of this market. Each of them is sold with pre-installed Win XP. What does that news mean for the owners of them (including me!). Not too much. The important security updates will be released but any updates in functionality might not be repaired at all.
I can bet most of you does not like the new product Windows Vista, me neither. We have to wait for the Windows 7 to e released. Fortunately it won't be long. Soon this OS will be available as PR1 (pre-release) version. They are voices saying that this is twin of Ms Vista. Haven't play with it too much so i cannot say. However, I hope it'll have something different, otherwise it will be time for a OS switch... maybe MacOS??

Happy birthday FACEBOOK!!!
Yes, exactly five years ago, 04.02.2004, student Mark Zuckerberg published facebook (thefacebook as it was called till 2005), which gives us five years old kid. No seriously, his project has grown to one of the biggest, what is called social networking websites. Long behind are MySpace, bebo, hi5, badoo and others. Nowadays the "population of facebook" counts at about 130mln people.
How many of you have account on Facebook?? I can bet almost all!!! The expansion of Facebook and other social networking communities allowed people to communicate with their friends, exchange videos, photos, sharing there music, playing so in general having lots of fun. It is good, isn't it??
Well not soo good. There are very serious cases in which people were killed. I remember reading a article in one of the London's newspapers about the wife who was killed by her husband just because she changed her relationship status.
That is not the end. There are researches which proves that people spending great deal of time on that websites become more prone to depression and anxiety(Well, I'm fine so far:)). Some of them are becoming addicted to facebook, which can be one of the worst cases. You change your real life in virtual life!
What can I say? I congratulate the Facebook team for good work, and keep it up guys!!!

Snow Day (and night)
If you live in London or around it, you've been surprised by the huge snowfall:)) Since I came to London I've not seen that amount of snow in here. It was really shocking what it can do to the country that is not prepared for it.

Let's start at the beginning, yesterday's night. We all saw what was happening during the evening. It was snowing quite heavy, but what was happening at night was a nightmare. The whole London transport was paralyzed. I've seen buses not able to start up from the place they stopped, snow fights, some weird snowman's and a lot of people completely not knowing what was happening. There was no bus services whatsoever. This situation left me, my girlfriend and one friend in looong walk home (3h).

Can you believe in it? This city is not prepared for that kind of weather! Even today, the transport has not been re-opened. !0 out of 11 tube lines were suspended, bus service withdrawn.

So what are we Londoners supposed to do?? Go outside, have a snow fight and build a snowman, I guess. At least it is better than Uni and Work, isn't it??

Google Notebook
While searching for some information about Gmail offline, which I mentioned in the post below, I found some interesting application at Google Labs. The application that caught my attention is Google Notebook. It might be very useful program for everybody. It allows you to "note" some information which you've found on the web.
It works as a plug in to the browser (in my case Firefox). In the corner of the window you can see its presence. After you click on the name you will see a window in which you can make different "notebooks" to which the information will be stored. If you wish to add any of the content of the web page to the notebook just mark it and right-click on it. On the menu you'll have the option saying "Note this (Google Notebook)". After it is in the application, you might want to comment on it or add label.
How many times have you found interesting information on the web, which you were too lazy to copy or note somewhere? After a while you realized that you need it no. Well, it happened to me couple of times, so for sure the Google Notebook will be great help:))

Work on your gmail account OFFLINE!
Do you have gmail account? Now you can work with it even if you don't have connection with the internet. Google Labs has given the opportunity to do it when you are offline. Among the activities that you can perform are checking your mail, adding labels, saving them and writing the messages. In the last case the messages are gonna be sent immediately after the connection with internet has been retrieved.
For now that tool is available for the people who are testing the products by Google Labs. However, it is very easy to join them.
It is not the first tool working offline from Google. We all know that Google Docs and Google Reader might be used offline.
Below there is a video by Google made to represent the new feature:
